Mike Bothwell is the founder of the Batesburg-Leesville Racquet Community. He is retired and volunteers in the school district's mentoring program. Mike knew that tennis would be a positive influence on the kids, one that they could enjoy for the rest of their lives. The problem was that tennis lessons were too far away and too expensive. So, Mike "went back to school" to become a tennis coach. He completed the US Tennis Association's requirements for studying, training, and testing to become a certified teaching coach.
Mike started the program with kids in the mentoring program. It has since taken off with people from the town and the surrounding communities, ranging from age 6 through 60+. The program is a not-for-profit. The lessons and loaner equipment are free. Nobody takes a paycheck. The expenses are covered by donations. Mike is pursuing the construction of a new tennis and pickleball facility. It will provide public access and the ability to reserve courts. The facility will include restrooms, lights, paved parking, and a covered pavilion with picnic tables. The program receives a lot of positive feedback. One of the more common comments is how much fun people have. We emphasize demonstrating good character traits with the kids. Mike wants the program to leave a lasting, positive influence on the kids and the community. Come join the fun! |
